Erasmus Corner at IES Tegueste

The Erasmus + projects of the IES Tegueste are reactivated, although it is true that they have not been stopped! The KA229. Education &  Entrepreneurship will already have its first mobility at the end of September, The KA229 Jobs4Future project will go to Romania with students to meet their partners in October. The third meeting of the KA229 FUSION in Greece is scheduled for September.

In addition, the KA103 projects of the Higher Cycle have had student´s mobilities in Barcellona, ​​Italy and the teaching staff in Porto, Portugal.

The KA102 Middle Cycle Projects, Consortium Coordinators (Tegueste - Politécnico de Las Palmas - Garoé) have had student´s mobilities in Wroclaw, Poland, in Catania, Italy, and in Barcellona, ​​Italy. And its teachers have attended work sessions in Porto, Portugal. The eTwinning meetings continue and the work of each project is consolidating and affecting more students and teachers.

Two Cinematic Portrayals of Teachers: John Keating in Dead Poets Society and Terence Fletcher in Whiplash

 We have an eTwinning project with students called FUSION as well. This platform allows us to share our project’s results,partners’ views and cultures. We as teachers set up a discussion’ Films about education our reviews’ on forum.After that,On 16th June,2021,We organised a live event for all the members of the TwinSpace and booked a virtual room and made a video-conference about education related movies with 20 participants.For many people,movies are one of life’s greatest pleasures.

I wanted to talk about comparison to two onscreen figures of teachers, that is John Keating (Dead Poets Society) and Terence Fletcher (Whiplash),of course mainly teachers’ attitude towards students.Attitude is very important when you are teachers.It affects students in many ways and can shape their learning experience.The teachers’ attitude towards the subject and student is significant in creating desire to learn in the students. It's about an inspirational, unconventional English teacher and his students at "the best prep school in America" and how he challenges them to question conventional views by such techniques as standing on their desks.His attitude and fresh perspective have deep impact on his students’ lives This movie is my all time favourite. Whiplash" is cinematic adrenalin. It tells us the conflict between a music student and his teacher.How far are you willing to push yourself to succeed? How far are you willing to push someone else to force them on the path to success?

We can discuss this music teachers’ teaching style and teacher attitude towards students. If you haven’t watched Whiplash,you should. these two teachers’ beliefs, their methods, and their impact on students As a cinematic image of teachers as heroes who inspire and support their students. Another feature common for many onscreen teachers, including Keating and Fletcher, is their being based on real-life figures. How can we describe Keating’s and Fletcher’s beliefs influencing their work? Keating believes his role is to build students’ confidence, make them feel they can change the world, and convince them they should seize the opportunities life provides them with. Fletcher is in favor of the view that students should not be praised, but pushed to their limits for the sake of results. What are the differences in Keating’s and Fletcher’s methodologies? Keating aims at replacing a traditional approach to education with demonstration and involving students in practical activities. For Fletcher, maintaining a sense of threat in his students is the key to motivating them. What is Keating’s and Fletcher’s impact on their students? Keating’s teaching makes his students pursue new interests or manage their personal matters effectively. Fletcher’s influence is best reflected by his students’ anxiety, exhaustion, and – in some cases – the increased drive to practice.

We as teachers are responsible for preparing students for their world-the world of the future. Teachers need to empower students to maximize their potential,discover passions and develop as collaborative, critical thinkers.Teachers play a big role in creating the conditions for students’ engagement at school.Positive attitudes influence students’ personality. Teaching is much more than saying and explaining. We,FUSION teachers from 6 different countries exchange good practices to renew the knowledge and widen the teaching methods with the help of digital devices.We also try to understand our students’ emotions such as their interests,fears and worries.We want to be able to make a positive difference in the lives of our students.

Reviews films about education

Last June 16, teachers involved in the ERASMUS+ project FUSION have discussed the films and series about education they had seen during the year and reviewed them . Teachers from Turkey, Spain , North Macedonia , Greece , Hungary and France exchanged about how films and series present the educational system.

Spain  was the first Team to participe with the fim It All Starts Today (French: Ça commence aujourd'hui). It is a 1999 French drama film directed by Bertrand Tavernier. It was entered into the 49th Berlin International Film Festival where it won an Honourable Mention. Daniel is schoolmaster of a kindergarten in a small French town. The local economy, which depended entirely on coal production, has been mired in a depression ever since the mines were closed.

Secondly our French partner introduced 2 French films and two recent French series with school and education as background. All highlight the difficulties of teachers in "prioritary zones " and praise the great commitment and work of the educational staff.

The Turkish team talked about  two onscreen figures of teachers, that is John Keating (Dead Poets Society) and Terence Fletcher (Whiplash),of course mainly teachers’ attitude towards students. We will tell about this part in a complete post shortly.

Preparing a new FUSION work meeting.

For our next meeting we have prepared an exhibition about films that cover all spectra about adolescent education. Here we have the selected films and the preparatory comments:

  • The Class = entre les murs by Corinne . 2008 Palme d'Or at the Cannes Festival

    The Class is a semi-autobiographical account of a French language and literature teacher 's experience in a middle school in Paris, particularly illuminating his struggles with "problem children"
    First I did not want to see it because it deals with "difficult" schools and I had spent 12 years in this kind of schools . But finally , this movie was not a horror movie at all .
    It relates everyday experiences of most teachers , but with compassion for both teachers and students.
    I recommend it to all teachers who are in difficulty so they understand they are not alone , or those who do not understand how difficult it can be to teach in some areas , and judge their colleagues.
    Parents should watch it , to have an insight from what is happening in some schools .
    It show also the failures of the French educational system.

  • La Vie scolaire Corinne France

    This movie was directed and written by a famous French slam singer Grand Corps Malade .
    It shows everyday life in a suburbia school near Paris . A young CPE discovers the problems of these areas , poverty , complicated family situations , drug dealing,  school drop out , and the different ways the adults try to fix the situation and fight against them. Without always finding a solution...

    La Vie scolaire The trailer

    This trailer highlights the atmosphere you will find in the movie , funny situations , which are going to make you laugh , but also lots of tenderness and emotion. This movie shows real life situations in a ZEP ( Zone d'éducation prioritaire"), no caricature , no judgement , just a great thank you to all these people who struggle everyday to save these youngsters and provide them a future.

    (1_m 1) Merlí (1st season) and Sapere Aude (2nd season)

    (By Malu) This is the Spanish original of Le faute a Rousseau. It is very successful here not only among youngsters but also, adults and teachers like I am. The relationships between the students and the innovative and vital way the Philosophy teacher has to approach the students is a "must". I think it is a very good example of a "well connected series to reality"because the audience not only see the problems around young people and schools but all the different relationships we are now living within family, couples and in the working environment. It deserves to be given an opportunity.

    Freedom Writers

    (By Malu) This is an old film (2007) based on true events in a school in California. Erin Gruwell had the idea of writing diaries within the Language sessions in a very mutlracial environment in which racial tension is increasing because of the rival gangs in the area. The teacher invites the students to write their own diaries with their own experiences just to connect with each of them as a way to develop the personal interaction she misses and also the development of the written linguistic competence. This experience is included in a project called City at Peace. Using the events among the students works the Holocaust in her class in a real way: visiting the Museum of Tolerance and inviting real survivors. The teaching technique we see there is the PROJECT WORK. Writing, expressing emotions, being respected and listened in the diaries is how they learn.

    La faute à Rousseau (series)

    This French series is a remake from a Spanish series entitled Philo .
    It deals with the relationship of a philosophy teacher and his class( and his son who is his student) . Each episode highlights another philosophical topic such as duty , love , honour, etc.. that's why
    I highly recommend this series to terminales students in order to prepare their philosophy exam.
    I liked it also because it is fresh, funny and even if it not always realistic, its insight in the role of a teacher in the building of their students' personalities is quite interesting and motivating. The teacher has a very original pedagogy , and it must admit , that even if his ideas seem a bit crazy sometimes, ( such as sending them to the café to get answers) , some of them are original and innovative.

    Ça commence aujourd'hui / It all starts Today. Bertrand Tavernier

    This film is social cinema, shot with documentary technique, with some professional actors and others taken directly from the educational environment. To accentuate the documentary effect of the film, which creates great verisimilitude, Tavernier frequently uses sequence shots and shoulder-to-shoulder shooting.
    Movie of the year 1999 but current.
    It is a criticism of the indifference and bureaucratization of the social assistance system, of the authorities who look elsewhere, of the citizens who ask for help and bless left-wing policies, but when they lose their benefits, they leave crying to a far-right party, of a passive system, unconcerned with reality and more interested in reports and technicalities than in daily problems.
    On the other hand, it is an optimistic film, which calls for the responsibility of all members of the community, which shows the possibility of improving the system from within. Link

    It's about an inspirational, unconventional English teacher and his students at "the best prep school in America" and how he challenges them to question conventional views by such techniques as standing on their desks.
    This movie is my all time favourite.

    La Ola

    (By Malu) (2008) This is a very hard film my colleagues who teach Philosophy used in their sessions as a compulsory film to see in class, to debate about dictatorships and its consequences. The film is about a teacher who experiments in his class to demonstrate to his students what life is under this sort of government policies but, the action ends up out of control with a very tough ending. It is very interesting to analyze the importance of reflecting and think deeply about the strategies we use to implement the contents and values we want to transmit to our students. It is quite radical but it works as a good starting point to reflect on these issues. We think that our ideas to implement contents are good but we must think about the details: who, what, when, how, why…we do that to be really successful.

    Le remplaçant ( The substitute) 2 pilot episodes

    A new French series staring Joey Starr , our national bad boy , as a substitute teacher in a French lycée. As in most series the teacher is atypical , with a different relationship with his students . But he is also the proof that a former bad boy can become a committed teacher. I loved these two first episodes and I hope they will go on with the series even if the teachers and students are a bit caricatural . Here again , relationships are more important than teaching . But it is interesting to see how this teacher tries to motivate his students to read and appreciate literature.

    L'école de la vie ( the school of life) , a new French series ( 2021)

    is more about life than school .
    A teacher ,whose wife died by giving birth , discovers in each episode another aspect of his students' personal lives and problems such as addictions , beaten children , etc .. He is really committed in his job and
    despite his private problem does not hesitate to help his students .
    Again , his teaching methods are sometimes criticized by his colleagues because a bit too innovative . He organises debates , role plays , makes his students think . As a History teacher and tries to make history alive.I like this series because it shows that we do not only have an educational role to play , but we should do something when our students are in trouble , even if it is only talk to the youngster to make them express their feelings.

    The Ron Clark Story

    The Ron Clark Story (also known as The Triumph) is a 2006 television film starring Matthew Perry. The film is based on the real-life educator Ron Clark. It follows the tale of an idealistic teacher who leaves his small hometown to teach in a New York City public school, where he faces trouble with the students.
    It teaches great lessons about giving it your all and being okay with failure. The lessons Ron Clark has taught in this movie alone are things I hope to take to my future classroom.

    Bad Education is not your typical high school movie where all of a sudden the perfect teacher appears and drastically changes the lives of all students.

    This a movie where a motivated and curious students' mind discovers the single largest public school embezzlement scandal in American history.
    Long Island school superintendent and his assistant are credited with bringing the district unprecedented prestige. Frank is a master of positive messaging, whether before an audience of community leaders or in an office with a concerned student or parent. That changes when a student reporter uncovers an embezzlement scheme of epic proportions, prompting Frank to devise an elaborate cover-up.

    Dangerous minds

    Plot:Louanne Johnson is an ex-marine, hired as a teacher in a high-school in a poor area of the city. She has recently separated from her husband. Her friend, also teacher in the school, got the temporary job for her. After a terrible reception from the students, she tries unconventional methods of teaching (using karate, Bob Dylan lyrics etc) to gain the trust of the students.
    Sometimes by using different approaches, you can reach your final goal which is the to educate children. A movie from the past that everyone have to see it.

    Film review: Les sous-doués

    Éretlenek ( Les sous-doués)
    A really good French film about the graduation. This film has to be on everybody’s bucket list, because it is a very exciting, humorous and funny movie from the 80’s. All of the XIV. Louie secondary school from Versailles students failed in their graduation. The directorate find out new techniques to make the results better, but the students are very lazy. The story’s essence is that the students make a bad student prank and they have to go to the prison if they don’t graduate . So they have to graduate but they can’t do it by themselves.I really recommend this film because it shows how many different funny ways to graduate and everybody has to grow up.

World Book Day: April 23rd

Do we really need a special day to celebrate the importance of books and reading? The answer seems to be yes. That is why on 23rd of April every year we are more conscious about the necessity of books, authors, bookshops, libraries and readers in this world we have to cope with now. But we, readers, know that reading is part of our lives (we don’t need anyone to remind us that fact) and these pandemic times have brought an unexpected and amazing gift, the number of members within our “specie” has increased around the world! This last Friday some of my students during my last session of the day (from 14.00 to 15.00) decided to work on these posters to remind us using some quotes, big fonts and bright colours that reading gives us many positive things. FUSION is our project to make visible how the use of apps, devices, social networks can help us to improve our teaching and our learning…at the end, our lives. Here we have a new opportunity to celebrate all these possibilities. Thanks to these guys who did such a good job at the end of the week despite being tired and stressed with all the exams they have before leaving school, definitely, in just a couple of weeks.

DÍA MUNDIAL DEL LIBRO: 23 de abril

 ¿Necesitamos realmente un día especial para celebrar la importancia de los libros y la lectura? La respuesta parece ser positiva. Es por ello que cada año el 23 de abril somos más conscientes de la necesidad de tener libros, autores, librerías, bibliotecas y lectores en este mundo en el que tenemos que sobrevivir. Pero nosotros, los lectores, sabemos que la lectura es parte de nuestras vidas (no necesitamos que nadie nos recuerde lo evidente) y estos tiempos de pandemia nos han traído un regalo increíble e inesperado: el número de miembros de nuestra “especie” ha aumentado en todo el mundo. El viernes pasado algunos de mis alumnos/as durante la última sesión del día (de 14.00 a 15.00) decidieron trabajar en estos posters que nos recuerdan, usando algunas citas, grandes letras y brillantes colores, que la lectura nos da muchas cosas positivas. FUSION es nuestro proyecto para visibilizar como el uso de aplicaciones, dispositivos técnicos, redes sociales puede ayudarnos a mejorar nuestra enseñanza y nuestro aprendizaje...al final, nuestras vidas. Aquí tienen una nueva oportunidad para celebrar todas estas posibilidades. Gracias a los chicos y chicas que hicieron posible este trabajo al final de la semana a pesar de estar cansados y estresados con todos los exámenes que tienen antes de dejar definitivamente el instituto en un par de semanas.

Our "Environmental FUSION" posters

In March, we have been working the unit about environment within the curriculum in 2nd bachillerato. It has been a unique opportunity to develop our linguistic and digital competences creating posters with messages which reinforce the urgent need to protect our planet for us and for future generations. We have selected some of the final products designed by our students. We suggested this product thinking in FUSION which always promotes the use of different apps to enrich learning in all fields. The posters will be also uploaded to the PIDAS Project, a regional initiative which includes the Sustainability Link we develop in our schools.  En marzo, hemos estado trabajando la unidad de medioambiente dentro del currículo de 2º bachillerato. Ha sido una oportunidad única para desarrollar las competencias lingüística y digital creando posters con mensajes que refuerzan la necesidad urgente de proteger nuestro planeta para nosotros y para generaciones futuras. Hemos seleccionado algunos de los productos finales diseñados por el alumnado. Sugerimos este producto pensando en FUSION que siempre promueve el uso de diferentes aplicaciones para enriquecer el aprendizaje en cualquier campo de conocimiento. Subiremos los posters al Proyecto PIDAS, una iniciativa regional que incluye el Eje de Sostenibilidad que trabajamos en nuestras escuelas. Échale un vistazo a los posters y, si es posible, pon tu granito de arena siguiendo estos consejos.

Using APPS in vocational studies at IES TEGUESTE

We want to share with you the work done by one of our students in the Physical- Chemical Test Module which is part of the curriculum worked in the first year of the Vocational Training Studies of Quality Control and Analysis Lab. Our colleague, Ana Belén Déniz, teacher in the Department of Chemistry asked her students to record all the process of the determination of the viscosity of water by Ostwald viscometer. The work done by Claudia Martín Hernández is excellent and shows us the importance of being digital competent using apps to edit the contents in a more attractive and visual approaching. This is a bilingual module and the final product done by this student deserves to be known. We consider this video stands for the aims FUSION proposed us from the very beginning of the Erasmus + project. Enjoy it!

USANDO APLICACIONES DIGITALES EN LOS CICLOS PROFESIONALES EN EL IES TEGUESTE

 Queremos compartir con ustedes el trabajo hecho por una de nuestras estudiantes en el Modulo de Ensayos físicos-químicos que es parte del programa desarrollado en el primer año del Ciclo Superior de Laboratorio de Análisis y Control de calidad. Nuestra compañera, Ana Belén Déniz, profesora del Departamento de Química pidió a su alumnado que grabara todo el proceso de la Práctica que consiste en determinar la viscosidad del agua con el viscósimetro de Ostwald. El trabajo final hecho por Claudia Martín Hernández es excelente y muestra la importancia de ser competente digital en el uso de aplicaciones para editar contenidos con un acercamiento más atractivo y visual. Es este un módulo bilingüe y el trabajo final de esta alumna merece ser visto. Consideramos que este video como producto final representa los objetivos propuestos por FUSION al comienzo de nuestro proyecto Erasmus+. Disfrútenlo!

 

NEW YEAR – NEW HOPES

As is already mentioned in some of the previous posts, staying in touch is very important to anyone, especially to teachers that continue to work on FUSION. And in the New Year, we decided to continue with our online meetings and talk about our future activities.

Our first meeting in 2021 was on the 15th January. One of the most important thing for us, is to be able to continue our work and the project. In order to do that, the project coordinator Hacer Yayla in agreement with all the other participants involved, decided to apply for a prolongation of the project for a year. Hopefully we will get the chance to meet again and finish the project successfully in August 2022, with all of the planned activities completed.

Since all of us had to move to online teaching, we as teachers had to upgrade our skills and teaching methods and techniques. We all learnt new web tools that will help us do our job more efficiently.

During the meeting, teachers decided to share some of those web tools and try to incorporate them in their everyday teaching. We mainly talked about Language Teaching Apps. So some of the tools that will be used are:

   1. Liveworks sheet – a tool that allows you to transform your traditional printable worksheets (doc, pdf, jpg...) into interactive online exercises with self-correction, which we call "interactive worksheets";

   2. Wordwall – a teaching resource that allows you to create a customized pack of interactive and printable activities;

   3. Padlet - an online virtual “bulletin” board, where students and teachers can collaborate, reflect, share links and pictures, in a secure location;

   4. Classcraft – a tool that combines time-tested pedagogy with a modern approach, harnessing the power of what kids love, games and stories to promote strong connections between students and teachers;

   5. Kahoot – a game-based learning platform that makes it easy to create, share and play learning games or trivia quizzes in minutes;

   6. Learning apps - is a versatile tool for learners, teachers and teacher trainers who want to use or create a variety of different activities to practise the full range of language systems (grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation) and language skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing).

We all started this year with a lot of plans and many hopes. Teaching and learning go hand in hand and it’s a never ending relationship. We learnt many new things and found new ways to teach. Teachers and students together found a way to adapt and adjust to the new kind of education and we can all agree that one of our biggest hopes for this year, is to go back to school, to be in a classroom with our students, to be able to meet and see each other.

FUSION team members are looking forward to a year where meeting your friends will be possible once again.

Goodbye to 2020 and Welcome 2021

Life was going smoothly for millions around the world until January 2020, schools were functioning well, people were moving around freely, and students were preparing for their classes and exams. In about a couple of months, the pandemic started spreading very rapidly around the globe.
Suddenly, one piece of news dropped like a bombshell – schools are closing down in view of the massive outbreak of COVID-19. Parents started panicking, teachers were confused and stressed, and children were excited about the unexpected long vacations they were going to get.Everyone had to say goodbye to the classical physical classrooms and the days of the old traditional schooling system.

Teachers face a new experience and a new challenge.They need to prepare themselves for digital classrooms, they need to ensure they are efficiently familiar with the necessary tools and need to be internet savvy. Classrooms will be converted to virtual ones. The pandemic had an enormous effect on the educational system. School classrooms were replaced with digital classrooms where teachers and students were working from home. Teachers started teaching students through online communication platforms such as Zoom, GoToMeeting, Google Hangouts, etc.We as FUSION teachers are ready to take our place in future’s education.
Our project FUSION involves future inside ,we are future-minded 21st century teachers.We are trying to find the right skills to be part of digital transformation of teachers with synergy of all partner schools and innovative teams.We have already done more than 6 online meetings and adapted digital skills into our lessons.
On the 31st December at one second past midnight the day will change from Thursday to Friday and the year 2020 will end,2021 will begin.
2020 is felt like the worst year ever by people around the world because of the deadly pandemic.But,new year means new beginnings and fresh starts.At the end of the year we not only evaluate the year and its achievements or failures but also look at the future with hope.I wish the new year will bring back our normal days and an end to the pandemic.

CHRISTMAS is coming...

December, the last month of the year, is almost finished and Christmas is round the corner! This traditional festivity is very “different” this year. We are living unexpected ways to celebrate these dates. Maybe, many of us won’t be allowed to share dinners, chats and gifts with our loved ones because of the restrictions of the pandemic. What to say about hugs and kisses but…we trust in the coming months, in better times, in friendship and new meetings. FUSION is here and it will be there, face to face or mask to mask, to meet again. We will talk about education, technology, teaching, Erasmus + and eTwinning. We will laugh, hug and share all the good things this project has given to us from the very beginning. Meanwhile… being positive about these coming months, the IES Tegueste Team wish all the FUSION members, the best possible Christmas and New Year celebrations… sending you a huge “virtual” hug!

LLEGA LA NAVIDAD…

 Diciembre casi se acaba y la Navidad está a la vuelta de la esquina. Esta celebración tan tradicional es muy diferente este año. Nos toca vivir “inesperadas” formas de celebración para estas fechas. Quizás, muchos de nosotros no podamos compartir cenas, tertulias y regalos con nuestros seres queridos a causa de las restricciones de la pandemia. ¡Qué decir de abrazos y besos! Pero...confiemos en los meses venideros, en mejores tiempos por llegar, en la amistad y los nuevos encuentros. FUSION está aquí y estará ahí, cara a cara o mascarilla a mascarilla, para reencontrarnos. Reiremos, nos abrazaremos y compartiremos todo lo bueno que este proyecto nos ha dado desde el principio. Mientras tanto....siendo positivos y pensando en esos meses que están por llegar, ¡el Equipo del IES Tegueste les desea a todos los miembros de FUSION las mejores celebraciones posibles para Navidad y el Nuevo Año enviándoles un enorme abrazo “virtual”!

FUSION and Staying in touch

Many people worked tirelessly for this project to become real. Most of all, our very dear coordinator Hacer gave her heart when writing the project. She treats it with love and tends to it passionately and with the outmost care. We and our student worked for a year on the eTwinning project and in March 2019, Hacer applied for the Erasmus+ funding.

We always stayed in touch no matter what, and I remember when months later, on 24th July, I received the message in our Whatsapp group that the project had been approved. I was having a great time on holiday and that message made it even better. I still keep it on my phone  We were all thrilled and over the moon that we were given the opportunity to finally meet each other, so that we could continue on this wonderful journey called FUSION.
Coordinators continued communicating with each other. We discussed our future steps and arranged the first meeting in Ankara, Turkey, in November 2019. We were all eager to meet each other and we finally did on the 25th of November. We spent all week working and learning new web tools and most importantly connecting with one another. It was a week filled with new experiences, new friendships were made, new things were learnt. We laughed a lot and while being introduced to Turkish culture, cuisine and tradition, what made the biggest impression was the Turkish hospitality and the loving and caring nature of the people we met. After a week spent together, we all left with joy in our hearts that we will meet again in February in North Macedonia.
It was my outmost pleasure to host my dear friends and partners when they came to our school. Among all the work and all the trainings, the teachers had, we all learnt new web tools that will help us with our work and that is, when educating some very brilliant young people. None of us could have imagined just how important that will become in the months to follow. I was more than happy that I could show some of the most beautiful places my country has to offer to my very dear guests. If only we all had known that this meeting would be the last one for this year. But none of us did, and none of us could have predicted what would happen just 2 weeks after they all went home.

 On 11th March WHO announced COVID-19 a pandemic and all countries closed their borders one after another. The whole world went into a lockdown. It was, and still is unbelievable how fast everything happened. Despite all the difficulties and all the challenges we had to face in our everyday life, we still continued working on FUSION and communicating on a regular basis. Because FUSION is no longer just another Erasmus+ project. FUSION is friendship, love and care. FUSION is FAMILY. And what do you do when you can’t go and see your family? You meet online, and you talk and support each other. 
So, ever since the pandemic happened we met online regularly. Maybe a lot of things stopped or better said, were forced to stop, but a teacher’s enthusiasm is not something that has the pause button 

OUR ONLINE MEETINGS
In order to discuss our further steps, we met online 6 times in 2020.

1. 26.03.2020 – Our first online meeting was in March just 2 weeks after COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. We all saw the importance of us meeting and we scheduled one as soon as we could. During the meeting we talked how we can adapt to the new situation that we all had found ourselves in. We all agreed that we need to continue with the activities written in the application, with some slight variations because of the virus. It was also decided that regular online meetings are crucial for the project and the more frequent the communication between us is, the better the results at the end will be.

2. 23.04.2020 – During this meeting we decided that we are going to create an acrostic poem about the Corona virus confinement. We talked about working on the robotics dictionary and decided how to distribute the words and terms that are to be translated, among the partners. A decision was made that every country will create a poster for only one letter of FUSION and all of those posters will later be put together. We scheduled another meeting for May.

3. 07.05.2020 – Our acrostic poem was completed and published on social media. Also the posters were created and put together. During this meeting we talked about the possibility of travelling from September. We also discussed and planned our future activities, which included sports videos and how our students are staying active during the lockdown. We decide to create one joint video about the sports activities.

4. 30.06.2020 – As promised we continued meeting regularly and this was our last meeting before the summer break. The robotics dictionary was completed and a decision was made to wait until the end of August before planning anything else. We wished each other a nice and peaceful summer promising to meet again in 2 months.

5. 31.08.2020 – After the summer break this was our first meeting. As decided before, we waited until August to see what the situation would be like and whether or not we can plan our mobility to Spain. But unfortunately at that time, travelling was still not possible, so we decide to postpone it. We talked about what we are going to do this school year and we planned some of the activities for the teachers and the students. We decided to meet again in September.

6. 28.09.2020 – This will be our “last” meeting for 2020. “Last” because we decided that for this year’s celebration of Erasmus Days we are all going to organize a joint webinar on 15th October. Each of the coordinators are going to present a web tool that other teachers will find it very useful for the online teaching. Every partner decided which tool they are going to present during the webinar and we invited all of the teachers from our schools. We also decided how we are going to celebrate Erasmus Days within our schools.

STAYING IN TOUCH FOR US IS VERY IMPORTANT. IT’S WHAT HELPS US GET THROUGH THESE CHALLENGING TIMES. HOPEFULLY IN 2021 WE WILL BE ABLE TO MEET OUR FUSION FAMILY AGAIN. UNTIL THEN, STAY SAFE WITH LOTS OF LOVE IN YOUR HEARTS!!!

My first Erasmus+ Project AKA Pestalozzi

Following the suggestion of Hacer Yayla to remember our first experience with European Programs I am going to tell you about my personal experience.
In 2007 the Pestalozzi Scholarships were offered to teachers, including an invitation to participate in the Ancient Greek Theater Seminar in the city of Nicosia, in Cyprus. The seminar was attended by the Greek film and theater director Michalis Cacoyannis. Initially, I thought it was going to be very difficult for me to be chosen, but at the end a teacher from Zaragoza and I could attend as representatives of Spain. There were teachers from Russia, Greece, Latvia, France, England and other countries.
We stayed in the capital, at the Hotel Cleopatra, and visited several secondary schools during the week, where the students represented various plays. We worked with Greek actresses  who led the sessions on acting, and we were also able to attend various lectures on ancient classical theater.

We were very well received and logded. The organizing committee took us to various places with very important archaeological excavations.
The food was spectacular and the interaction of the teachers and students was fantastic. The Spanish team, made up of Inmaculada Medina Lapeña and I, made our presentation on the teaching of ancient Greek and its grammar in Spain and we spoke in Greek.. We were the only ones who did the presentation in Greek, the rest did it in English.
I remember that week with great joy for having been able to participate in that experience.

Siguiendo la sugerencia de Hacer Yayla de recordar nuestro primera experiencia con Programas Europeos les voy a hablar de mi experiencia personal.

En al año 2007 se ofertaron las Becas Pestalozzi y entre ellas una invitación a participar en la ciudad de Nicosia, en Chipre, al seminario El teatro Griego Antiguo. En el seminario participaba el director de cine y teatro griego Michalis Cacoyannis. En principio era difícil que pudiera yo ser elegido, pero al final pudimos asistir una profesora de Zaragoza y yo como representantes de España. Había profesorado de Rusia, Grecia, Letonia, Francia, Inglaterra y otros países. Nos alojamos en la capital, en el Hotel Cleopatra, y asistimos durante la semana a varios institutos de secundaria, donde el al alumnado representó varias obras de Teatro. Actrices griegas nos dieron formación en teatro, y pudimos asistir también a varias conferencias sobre el teatro de la antigüedad clásica.
Fuimos muy bien recibidos y alojados. El comité organizador nos llevó a varias lugares con excavaciones arqueológicas de primer nivel.
La comida fue espectacular y la interacción del profesorado y alumnado fue fantástica. El equipo español, formado por Inmaculada Medina Lapeña y yo presentamos en lengua griega nuestra ponencia sobre la enseñanza del griego antiguo y su gramática en España. Fuimos los únicos que hicimos la presentación en griego, el resto lo hicieron en inglés.
Recuerdo esa semana con mucha alegría por haber podido participar en esa experiencia

 

 

What is essential ?

What is essential ?
Because of Covid crisis we are lead to ask ourselves what is really essential in our lives.
The first question raised by the crisis was what is more important? Saving human lives or saving the world’s economy? It is difficult to be balanced and to make decisions when our survival is at stake.

Of course, everybody agrees that food is essential, and that all the stores selling food need to stay open, they are said to be first necessity. Pharmacies are essential, too, especially when we are all likely to fall ill. During the first lockdown, they were the only stores open.

The French government is closing for the second time the shops that are not essential, and the least we can say, is that nobody agrees on what essential means. In fact, this time lots of other shops are open, and many shopkeepers are asking to keep their commerce open. Of course, buying shoes, books or clothes is maybe not essential, but it is essential for the shop owner and the shop assistants who earn their living there.

 The current crisis and the changes we are made to make in our lives, also question us about what is essential in our lives. We are not allowed to travel, to go out, we cannot meet people, and go to concerts, museums etc… We have to be careful even inside our homes, and stop kissing our children or grand parents to save lives. But missing these things can also kill.

We are living very hard times and it is very difficult to answer this question, but it is essential to find our own answer in order to survive.

Qu’est ce qui est essentiel ?

La crise du Covid 19 nous met face à une question complexe. Qu’est ce qui est essentiel dans la vie ?

La première question que soulève cette crise est qu’est ce qui est plus important ? Sauver des millions de vies ou sauver l’économie mondiale ? Il est difficile de donner une réponse à cette question et de prendre des décisions équilibrées lorsque notre survie est en cause

Bien sûr tout le monde est d’accord pour dire que la nourriture est essentielle et qu’il est impératif de pouvoir se soigner à une époque où nous sommes tous susceptible de tomber maladies , ce sont donc ces types de magasins qui ont pu rester ouverts pendant le premier confinement total car considérés de première nécessité.

Maintenant le gouvernement français, vient de décréter un deuxième confinement et plus personne n’arrive à déterminer ce qui est essentiel ou pas. En effet, ce deuxième confinement est moins strict que le premier et de nombreux commerçants demandent à ce que leur commerce reste ouvert. Il a pétitions qui s’ouvrent partout, les maires décident de contrer les règles gouvernementales et c…

Bien sûr les achats de chaussures, de vêtements, de livres et c..peuvent paraître superficiels, mais ils sont essentiels pour le propriétaire de magasin et ses employés, dont la survie dépend du chiffre d’affaires.

La crise actuelle et les changements qu’elle nous amène à faire dans nos vies, nous questionnent aussi sur ce qui est essential dans notre vie. Nous ne sommes pas autorisés à sortir, à voyager, aller au cinéma, théâtre , musée, concert . Nous sommes privés de beauté. Nous devons même être prudent dans nos foyers, et éviter d’embrasser nos enfants, ou nos grand parents pour sauver des vies, mais nous savons bien, que le manque de contact et d’amour tue autant que la maladie.

Nous vivons une époque difficile, et répondre à cette question n’est pas simple, mais répondre individuellement à cette question est essentielle pour notre survie.

My first Erasmus+ Project aka Comenius

Suggesting us to remember our first experience with European projects has been a wonderful and very emotional idea that our coordinator, Hacer, proposed us some weeks ago. I will never forget mine. “I can see, I can hear, I can SPEAK”. That was the name of our Comenius Project 2012-2014. It was not the first for IES Tegueste but it was my first in Europe. I was the coordinator and I learnt a lot about doing collaborative work, making very good friends, motivating students and enriching myself with this incredible experience. Turkey, Norway, Slovakia and France were our partners. Surprisingly, I have to say that I stayed in our first mobility to Ankara with our FUSION Project, in the same hotel I had stayed seven years before! One of my favourite photos during this Comenius was taken in Capadocia, in December, under the snow. It was magic. We organized many activities not only during the mobilities but also at home and, our families were very involved in the project and the reception in our school was incredible. One of the best weeks we enjoyed at that time in spite of the nerves and the loads of work we did to coordinate every single minute! Sessions with multinational groups working together, visits to the town and the most important places in the island like El Teide and food, lots of food to share having a good chat and an excellent company. Our partners received us in their towns and schools with generosity. Time and energy with very good humour to work in the project and to enjoy our time together, were the ingredients during the mobilities. My first visit to Turkey was just as amazing as my second one. I visited Ankara and Capadocia the first time and Ankara and Istambul the second and in both I confirmed Turkish people are incredibly lovely and hospitable and the food is so surprising with the different flavours, textures, colours, smells… Brilliant, that’s the adjective which describes my experience with my Turkish partners and with my Comenius and current Erasmus + FUSION.

MI PRIMER PROYECTO ERASMUS+ ANTES CONOCIDO COMO COMENIUS

 La sugerencia que Hacer, nuestra coordinadora, nos ha hecho hace algunas semanas para que recordáramos nuestro primera experiencia con Programas Europeos ha sido maravillosa y muy emocional. Yo nunca olvidaré la mía. “I can see, I can hear, I can SPEAK”. Este era el nombre de nuestro proyecto Comenius 2012-2014. No era el primero para el IES Tegueste pero si el primero para mí en Europa. Fui coordinadora del proyecto y aprendí mucho sobre trabajo colaborativo, hacer amigos, motivar al alumnado y enriquecerme personalmente con esta increíble experiencia. Turquía, Noruega, Eslovaquia y Francia eran nuestros socios. ¡Sorprendentemente tengo que decir que nos quedamos en nuestra primera movilidad en Ankara con el Proyecto FUSION, en el mismo hotel que había estado siete años antes con Comenius! Una de mis fotos favoritas durante este Comenius se sacó en Capadocia, en diciembre, bajo la nieve. ¡Fue mágica! Organizamos muchas actividades no solo durante las movilidades sino también en nuestro instituto. Nuestras familias se implicaron muchísimo y la recepción de socios en nuestro centro fue increíble. Una de las mejores semanas que disfrutamos en esa época a pesar de los nervios y de la enorme cantidad de trabajo que hicimos para coordinar cada minuto de la visita. Sesiones de trabajo con equipos multinacionales trabajando juntos, visitas a la ciudad y a los lugares más importantes de la isla como El Teide y la comida, mucha comida para compartir conversando y con una excelente compañía. Nuestros socios nos recibieron en sus centros con mucha generosidad. Tiempo, energía y buen humor para trabajar en el proyecto y disfrutar de buenos ratos fueron los ingredientes esenciales durante las movilidades. Mi primera visita a Turquía fue tan increíble como la segunda. En la primera visité Ankara y Capadocia y en la segunda, Ankara, de nuevo, y Estambul y en ambas confirmé que los turcos son gente muy cariñosa y hospitalaria y su gastronomía tan sorprendente en sabores, texturas, colores, olores... Increíble es el adjetivo que define mi experiencia con mis socios turcos, con mi primera experiencia Comenius y con el actual proyecto FUSION.

Turkish school Erasmus Days activities

We,as our Faruk Nafiz Çamlıbel Anatolian High School, celebrated ErasmusDays,2020 with several events.

ErasmusDays gave us the chance to share our experience, organize events about our projects. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, #ErasmusDays 2020 mostly consisted of virtual events. That’s why we, as Erasmus project implementers, created an eTwinning project titled Ers+SmarTeens to celebrate #Erasmusdays with 14 schools and more than 30 projects from all around Europe. We took part in this project with FUSION.

Our main goal is to celebrate #ErasmusDays and disseminate our projects.We planned many activities with using digital tools.This students centered project will last 3 months from October 2020 to December 2020.

Our students designed posters, joined the slogan competition,wrote acrostic poems related to Erasmus and ErasmusDays.You can see some examples below:

My Erasmus Story

My first Erasmus was in 2013,in Liberec,Czechia.Back then it went by the name of Comenius.Our school had project called ‘Home Sweet Home’ coordinated by a German school.It was a culture project.I was working at the same school but I was new in school.I was invited to travel to Czech Republic which was renamed as Czechia in 2016.I accepted the invitation.

I remember feeling freezing.It was the third week of March and in Ankara spring was about to come.Yet in Ankara it was shining,in Prague it was snowing.
Let me tell you what happened on my first Erasmus except cold weather.
I did some things for the first time on that Erasmus week.There was the first time that I travelled by plane.The first time I went abroad and I was away from my children.

My Erasmus meeting was the first time I had been out of the country.It was my first international flight.Everything was a new experience.We landed Prague Vaclav Havel Airport.It was almost at 10.00 at night.We took a bus and then subway to the city center.I have to admit that I don’t usually get on the bus or subway in Ankara.When we climbed up stairs of subway station,I was fascinated by Prague.It was like a fairy tale city from medieval age.Prague is very beautiful and unique.It is definitely a great city worth visiting,especially if this is your first time there.Let me tell you a secret.I visited Prague twice later and once with my family.
Next day,we explored the city.
Architecturally,Prague is quite different from Ankara. The architecture around the city like a visual history lesson in styles over the centuries: Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, 19th Century Neoclassical, Art Nouveau, Communist.Ankara is a young and modern city when we compare it with Prague.
After staying two nights in Prague,we set off for Liberec.Our host school met us and we gathered all the teams from Bulgaria,German,Spain,Poland,Iceland.It was the first time I had been such an international group.At school meetings ,presentations were done.Tasks and responsibilities were identified.The coordinator showed the task that was prepared by him beforehand.I learned a lot.
While in Liberec,we went up to the snow-capped mountain.It was my first ride in a cable car,and I had multiple minor panic attacks every time it swung from side to side.One day when we were there,we visited the Svijany brewery in Prisovice.It was the first time I had been in brewery.I remember that how difficult was to translate the our guide to our team in the factory.There were a lot words that did not know their meanings.

Before we were back in our countries,we went back to Prague and spent some time there together.We stayed in a boat hotel.It was the first time I stayed in a boat hotel.It was a good experience that I could sleep well.
All these firsts that happened 7 years ago.Firsts are exciting beginnings of whatever comes next-the first Erasmus offered me the possibility of new friends,new opportunities,new cities,new countries,new perspectives……
Erasmus turned me -transform myself into- a new person.I am now more wiser,more tolerant towards the others,more respectful of other cultures,more open-minded,more learner than before.I like this transformation. We need to be learning new things and experiencing new adventures.That brings anticipation and excitement to everyday.Over the past seven years,the more things I explore,the more I have discovered about this amazing world I live in.Thank you Erasmus :))
